Determining Availability of Books

It is a very good idea to verify the availability of a book before proposing it as a meeting topic; a book that is out of print, or very expensive, or difficult to locate will almost guarantee that the meeting will fail since few people will have read the book and discussion will be minimal.

The availability of a book basically depends on how easily it can be found locally. If enough copies can be borrowed or purchased for a reasonable price without having to travel too far or investing too much time in hunting for the book, the book should be considered sufficiently available to justify using it as a meeting topic.

The tabs below give some suggestions about places where books can be found, some of which will not be obvious to most people.

To see if a given book is available at Chapters/Indigo, follow this procedure:

  1. Go to the Chapters/Indigo Advanced Search.
  2. Make sure that the "IN" dropdown is set to "Movies & TV". Supply any details you know about the film in the form.
  3. Click on the Search button.
  4. A list of all of the different versions of the book that they have or can get will appear. Be careful to examine the list! In some cases, every version of the book will have a notation like 'Out of Stock' or 'Temporarily Unavailable to Order'; in those cases, you may be unable to get a copy of that book, even if it appears in the list many times. Also, be sure to read the format and price carefully; in some cases, you might only be able to get an expensive hardcover version or audio tape of the book, not an affordable paper copy. Also, it is sometimes noticeably cheaper to order the book from Chapters/Indigo via their online purchase option and have them ship it to your home or the nearest Chapters/Indigo than to buy it directly in the store.
